The media player is the small box or stick behind the screen that runs your signage app. Get it wrong and the screen shows a home menu or a black screen every time the power flickers. Choose the signage software first, then buy a player that software supports.
The short answer
- Most small businesses: the Amazon Signage Stick, about $100. It’s built for signage rather than streaming, Amazon says it works with more than 80 signage apps, and it boots straight into your signage app.
- You already have a Windows PC, mini PC or Chromebox: use your software’s web player in a browser and buy nothing.
- You like tinkering: a Raspberry Pi with piSignage, Anthias or OptiSigns’ free plan.
- Screens running 24/7 where downtime costs money: a commercial player such as the BrightSign HD225, about $420–$567.
- Thinking of a cheap Fire TV stick? Read the warning below first.

Check before you buy a Fire TV stick
Amazon is moving its Fire TV sticks from Fire OS, which is based on Android, to its own Vega OS, which is not. On Vega OS you can’t install Android apps from outside Amazon’s store, and most signage apps were built as Android apps. A signage app only works on a Vega stick if its maker has rebuilt it for Vega and published it in Amazon’s store.
What we know as of October 2026:
- The Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) was the first stick on Vega OS, and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD runs it too (FTVDB).
- Amazon has said all future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega OS (AFTVnews).
- A July 2026 guide listed the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, 4K, 4K Max and Fire TV Cube (3rd gen) as still on Fire OS (Kunal Ganglani). Amazon announced a refreshed 4K stick at the end of September 2026, and reports disagree on which system it runs.
Before you buy:
- Check the product listing for “Vega OS”.
- Look up your signage app’s list of supported devices.
- If in doubt, buy the Amazon Signage Stick, which is sold specifically for signage apps.
Make sure it starts by itself
A signage screen has to come back on its own after a power cut or a nightly power-off. Players built for signage, like the Amazon Signage Stick and BrightSign, are designed to do this. Streaming sticks and TVs often need a setting changed, and the setting moves between brands:
- Android TV and Google TV: give the signage app the “Display over other apps” permission (usually under Settings, Apps, Special app access), and turn off any battery or energy optimization for it (Look Digital Signage).
- Some TCL Google TVs: also open the “Safety Guard” app, choose “Permission shield”, then “Auto launch permission” (EasySignage).
- Fire TV sticks on Fire OS 8: there’s no menu to grant the permission. Signage vendors document a workaround that needs a computer and a command-line tool called ADB (Play Digital Signage).
- Some consumer TVs have a security or power app that blocks apps from starting at power-on. Search the TV’s settings for “autostart” and “over other apps” (Screenly).
Whatever you buy, test it once: unplug the screen and player at the wall, plug them back in, and check that your content comes back without anyone touching the remote.
The other options
Web player in a browser
Several signage apps run in a browser: you open a web address on the screen’s computer, it shows a pairing code, and you type that code into the app’s dashboard. OptiSigns, Fugo, Screenly and EasySignage all document this (OptiSigns, Fugo, Screenly, EasySignage). It’s the cheapest route if a PC is already connected to the screen. You’ll need to stop the computer sleeping and set the browser to open full screen at startup.
Google TV Streamer
Google raised the price of its Google TV Streamer to $149.99 on August 31, 2026, up from $99.99 at launch (Android Authority). It runs Google TV, so it can install signage apps from Google Play if your vendor has a TV app. At this price, though, the Amazon Signage Stick is cheaper and made for the job.
Apps built into the TV
Some signage apps run directly on Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) smart TVs, with no player at all. Kitcast lists both, for example (Kitcast). Check your software’s device list. Consumer TVs may still need the autostart settings above.
Commercial players
BrightSign is the long-standing name in professional signage. The HD225 sells for roughly $420–$567. That’s more than most single-location businesses need, but it’s the safe choice for screens that run all day, every day.
Screen first or player first?
Neither: choose the software first, because it decides which players you can use. Then use the cost calculator to compare total costs, and see our free software comparison if you only need one to three screens.
